Hi Al & Deb,
Another fantastic report! Bowman Bay is a very nice spot. I have often wondered if Anacortes is a contraction for Anna Cortes? Who knows?
On your way to Astoria, you might notice South Bend as you drive-through southbound on 101. On a full tide when the sun is out, South Bend is very beautiful. In the rain on a low tide; not so much.
Thanks, Eagle5

South bend looks interesting. Thanks for the tip!
Also, great question about Anacortes. I found this online, “ Anacortes was founded in 1879 by railroad surveyor Amos Bowman and named in honor of his wife, Anne Curtis”. I think there is a statue that explains this at the harbor.

My wife and I were born and raised in the northwest but just made our first cascade loop trip. We left Seattle area on a Friday morning, spent the night in Cle Elum (91 miles); then drove north to Winthrop (six hours including dog and lunch stops); beautiful drive along the Columbia River and lots of cherries (almost ripe); found a RV resort worthy of the name (fishing boats, kayaks etc for rent); then drove west over North Cascades Highway (with required stops). It seemed like every side road was a campground, park or similar. Continuing west was downhill and a pleasant if winding drive.

We have travelled the cascade loop twice, and loved it both times. So many things for people that love the outdoors. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
