Kansas City South to College Station

Looking for some veteran travel advise....

We are heading from Lee's Summit, Mo (South KC) to College Station for the Mizzou Game in our Class A Winnebago Vista. It looks like a number of options are available, and I was hoping to see if I could get some opinions, specifically through Dallas area, which I know can be a mess.

Currently looking at the following itinerary...

Day 1: KC to Choctaw Casino RV Resort in Durant Ok.
Day 2: Durant to College Station - no hurry

Looks like my paid RV Trip Wizard ( Option #1) is suggesting a less desirable route through Waco?

I also see no suggestions to go around the East side of Dallas on 635. I know there is constant road construction around Dallas so that may be why?

So any thoughts on what your preferred route would be? Again, I'm in no hurry and prefer staying away from traffic and interstates if given the option.
Thank you!

That comes down to what you like and are willing to tolerate! We often have traveled that route and have definite thoughts on what WE like. We avoid the "kill zones" along I35, if at all possible! Austin to Dallas is not on our list if there is another way.
If absolutely sure you want to go to Durant, that kills part of what we would do as we would drop South on I45 to Fort Smith, Ar. for a much safer trip and nicer territory, then we admit it is a bummer from there South but we have no safety concerns along that route.

Totally much safer and far more fun as it has trees and quiet versus traffic that gets up every day regretting being alive!
We avoid Dallas when we can and if we must, we avoid the route through from 75 to I 35, due to bad lane changes at that spot in South Dallas.
We do come/go that way if we are going in Eastern OK, though.
We find the point to come off 75 to I45 is an easy one as it seems to just morph, rather than a total change! I45 on South ,we feel much better than 35!
But , if you MUST?
We feel there are points to avoid in the change from 75 to get to 35!
If we have to, we go down to the intersection with 20 and then jog back West to 35! Slightly more miles (3-5?) but far less crazy!

The East Ok or West AR are not good for speed but we tend to drag more than speed anyway! Nicer country and nicer drivers! For campsite we tend to go for trees and country over the hustle!

Current note for construction as it is everywhere? I35 through the Austin area is prone to being bad for the next 5 years as they are beginning work to do "something" through downtown. There is a bypass on toll 130 but it is mot worth the trek for most folks so they are starting with more lanes through town but have not got the final plans, so it is just beginning on rebuilding the bridges, etc. and that means lanes closed!
We are on the East and North so no need to go into that most of the time!
Currently the work is night work but the lanes are still closed at different points!

I like your route much better..thank you!!! I had reservations at Choctaw RV Resort in Durant but those can be changed to accomadate a much more relaxing route.

If you wouldn't mind...do you have any suggestions for a full hookup campground south of Fort Smith? planning on driving 5-6 hours on day one from KC. Thanks again!

We have several along that route and not settled on the "best" yet!
We tend to go state and Corp of Engineer parks over commercial as the crowd seems to be a different breed of users. We also like the more protected/watched areas as there are patrols and fish and game folks at many sites as well as volunteers . We spent some years as volunteers and know those folks are not prone to tolerating the stuff we like to avoid.

Old grumpy folks like us want people to turn off the music and generators and go to bed! You can stay up all night --- as long as you are quiet about it!

One we like near Fort Smith:
https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232710
We don't have the military connections but friends like Fort Chaffee RV.

Not to sell this route TOO high so be aware it has some hills and curves. Not big scary mountain but not straight!
We tend to like going over into OK on 59 and 259 to avoid some trucks and log haulers on 71!
Queen Wilhelmina state park in Ar. can be nice if time is okay. But I admit a stop in Mena for RR museum was my thing! Not on everybody's list?

Fairly far South is Rocky Point park on Wright -Patman Lake as a favorite for us. Near Atlanta/Texarkana, TX, it is about right for a day from here.

You can see we tend to go to parks more than anything else and will drive out of our way for some.
Lots of personal choice in that areas and full is not necessary for us, but we do almost always go water and electric!

Go Tigers!!!

Years ago, we tried the mountaintop campground at Queen Wilhelmina State Park near Mena, AR, one time. We spent much of the night in the brick restroom because we were afraid the wind was going to blow our travel trailer off the mountain. Despite a policy against refunds, the park manager gave us a refund for our remaining nights when we explained the way we spent the night.

We also prefer COE cgs. and stayed in a nice one at Tenkiller Ferry Lake last year. It was called Pettit Bay cg. and was located at the north end of the lake south of Tahlequah. It had 30/50A power, nice concrete RV pads, lots of shade, and lake views. We paid $10 using our Lifetime Senior Passes.

And we agree with avoiding the D-FW metro area and I would also avoid US 71 south of Ft. Smith. It is slow and has a lot of accidents, but we were generally only using it between Mena and Texarkana. Going north from Mena, we generally used US 59 to Sallisaw, then west on I-40. US 59 is a much better, less stressful drive than US 71.

PS--I went to graduate school at TAMU back in olden times when Gene Stallings was the football coach (decades before he won a national championship at Alabama) and it was in the Southwest Conference.. But I've never rooted for them since they left the Big 12 and joined the SEC! Of course, I feel the same way about Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma leaving the SWC/Big 12 for the SEC. Not that I was ever a Texas fan even when they were in the SWC/Big 12.

Mountains

I would go for the first reply. You can stay in Arkansas and never detour to Oklahoma. It’s not interstate standards, but good roads. In August, I traveled both routes, one going, one coming. Dallas had some of the worst and longest construction I’ve ever experienced. Arkansas route is beautiful mountains, but not too steep. Other route is crowded and prairie all the way.

You can go to https://transport.tamu.edu/ and look at RV parking and possibly buy someone's on campus RV space. RV Lot 58 is the best with full hookups. You will be welcomed. Go to TexAgs.com for information on things to see there. Be sure to go to Midnight Yell Practice on Friday night (don’t ask what time). Work in a trip to the George Bush Presidential Library. George H W Bush and his wife are buried there. Museum is world class.

Having said all this, welcome to College Station, but I hope we upset your very good team.
