US 50 - America's Loneliest Highway and My Favorite Road To Date

We're not like Johnny Cash - but i feels like we have been everywhere, man and this might be our favorite road of all yet...
We drove this route from Salina, UT to Dayton, NV where we will be picking up US 395 to head south for Coleville and Yosemite NP - hope Tioga Pass opens up soon!
Was an absolutely stunning and beautiful drive. You're in the Great Basin so it is one range and valley after another - but pretty easy grades and turns. The one that drops into Austin is pretty significant, but not too bad along the way.
Not sure if it is still that lonely, but not a lot of traffic or civilization at all.
Our stops were at the Ely KOA for Great Basin NP and the railroad museum and ride and Cold Springs Station for just a night. The latter says Fallon, but it is 60 miles east of Fallon - absolutely in the middle of nowhere - but they do have a restaurant and bar!
Eureka looks worth exploring as another stop as well.
Would recommend the route as an alternative to the interstates.
Safe travels!

Forgot to add that the road is in great shape, too by and large...

Did you hike up the trail in Great Basin NP to see the bristlecone pines? Simply amazing!

Did not get to see the Pines. Wheeler Peak road was only only open to Mather Point...too much snow. Now heading down 395 and look to see them at Schulman Grove. Also hoping Tioga Pass opens next weekend so we can get into Yosemite!

Love the Basin. Spent 2 months this spring in the park as a volunteer Ranger/cave man, giving tours of Lehman Caves. Last year wheeler peak didn't open until July. This year there will be much construction so camping will only be first come/first serve.

We did the Ely KOA and train ride also last October...not much else to see downtown except for the sporting goods store. Did you get your book stamped?

We did the cave tour. Very different. Lots of talking to fill the hour. Cool you led them.
50 is closed at Blue Mesa in Colorado. We got on in Salina, UT.
Only found out about the passport in Cool Springs (Fallon though it is 60 miles east) so did not get the stamps. Cool marketing though.
And how about those Morman crickets! Ugh!!

Didn't count, but it was memorial day weekend so we probably saw a dozen or so...plus maybe a million Mormon crickets. Don't think we'll ever get them off the undercarriage of either vehicle
