The previous owner of our Winnebago Adventurer could not find the key for the 8" drop down hitch adapter lock, so we left it on. The 8" drop made the tow bar perfectly level, so all is great, right? Not so fast.
Whenever we entered a gas station or any other place with a medium embankment, the Roadmaster Sterling tow bar would dig (literally) into the asphalt. It would gouge the large nut on the bottom of the bar and the road. I became afraid that if we encountered the same situation on concrete, that it may break off the hitch.
Finally had enough and had the lock cut off, when halfway through our US tour. Bought a 4" drop down adapter from Amazon and installed it. Best change I ever made! The hitch has a slight up angle, but within required limits.
NO MORE bottoming out
It would take a really steep incline to do it again.
The "make it level" requirement has its merits (I know the reasons), but this "bottoming" situation is dangerous.
