Electric steps not working

We have a 2000 itasca suncruiser and all of a sudden the steps will not retract, any suggestions?

Try tapping the electric motor while power is applied to it. That's what got mine working. When the brushes on an electric motor get old or corroded, they won't start the motor. Tapping it wiggles it enough to get a connection; then it will work until it stops at a corroded place again.

I'll get the motor replaced before the end of the summer, but right now there are other items with a higher priority.

Mine is under the top step. I would expect it to be very close to the moving parts.

What brand and model steps? The trouble-shooting manual is online.
Blown fuse or motor controller?
While working on automatic steps, use CAUTION! The motor may move at any time, and has the power to sever a finger.
If you find the motor is bad, they are usually a window motor from a car. There are several threads about this subject. It may be quicker to use the search feature at the top of this page to find them and the solutions.

The motor is typically a drivers door window motor for a 1990 Taurus. Any good auto store will have it for under $50. Take the old one with you.

Inspect the diagram, page 5 of your owners manual. Make sure all connections are tight, including ground.

Try switching the switch near the door. Also see if anything happens when you turn on the ignition with the door closed.

DUHHH; sorry- I forgot. There is a magnet on the screen door and sensor on the adjoining wall(or visa-versa) that cause the steps to activate. Check it for proper operation after doing what ChasA said. That's covered in the manual also.

Our steps would fail to retract all the way. I took the connections loose and sprayed with contact cleaner and lubed the gear and it now works fine. Corrosion will form even in the weather-proof connections...it just may take longer.

Good luck,
Dave
