Question Ford F53 Error Code P1450

Data Sheet

I located and removed the canister (attached to driver side frame rail next to muffler) and the purge solenoid (right on the top of the engine as you look down after removing the dog house).

To test the solenoids on each I applied 12v power to them, and they made the expect clicking noises. The canister is not plugged as I can blow air through it. This leaves the sensor being bad? Guess I will look for it next. Not sure how to test it though. Thoughts?

On a follow-up, I can blow through the purge solenoid when it is actuated, but not when the circuit is open.

For the canister, it does not matter what position the solenoid is in, I can always blow through it. Is this the problem?

Realized I was not testing the canister vent solenoid when blowing through the canister, that required me removing it and blowing through the vent. It is open when the circuit is open, and closed when voltage is provided.

Should I just replace the gas cap, clear the codes, and see what happens?

I’m still trying to figure out what part you’re talking about?

Here is a good article covering the Ford Evap system.

Essentially the system is recording too high of a vacuum in the gas tank. That should eliminate cracks in hoses, as they would cause a lack of vacuum. There are no kinked hoses I can find which could be another source of the issue. I think the testing I have done thus far points toward the vent valve in the gas cap not opening at the required pressure, or the sensor in the sending unit being bad. Gas cap being cheap and easy to replace, I will try that first. Accessing and testing the sensor would require dropping the 80 gal gas tank. Something I am not ready or equipped to do. (unless of course I could access it from beneath the bed, I will have to check....)

I guess it could still be the parts I tested above, but they usually break by failing to cycle, and I have demonstrated that not to be an issue.

Lightbulb

Replaced the gas cap with a version that locks, because who wants to lose up to 80 gallons of gas while parked?

Cleared the pending and confirmed event codes, ran it for a 10 minute test drive and the computer cleared the permanent code which should indicate it ran a test cycle of the EVAP system and found no issues.

Guess that closes this out for me for now. Back to regular maintenance like replacing stripped screws in the door.
