Oil Weight for Onan GenSet

I have an Onan Marquis Gold 5500 Genset and was wondering what he best weight would be and quantity.

15W40. Check owner's manual for quantity of oil.

Always best to check the owners manual for type and quantity.

you should change the oil filter too.
onan pn 122-0836
wix pn 57398
napa pn 7398
napa oil filter wrench pn 775-9018

my onan 5500 gold genny holds 2 qts with filter change, but i could not put it all in at first.
i filled it with amsoil synthetic 15-40, installed the oil filler cap, and ran the genny to check for leaks.
then i was able to install the balance of 2 qts.

You can download many of the Onan manuals and spec sheets from the Cummins/Onan website.

For reference, you can generally plug in the make and model number of just about anything in Google and find a service/operators manual. Find it and print out a copy for future reference.

I have the same generator and run Amsoil full chemical synthetic small engine SAE 30/10w30. Made for air cooled generators. 30 wt is more fuel efficient and I run it for day's at a time in Houston heat with no oil consumption or overheating.

I believe there is a tag on your air cleaner cover that tells you the oil & air filter # and the viscosity and amount of oil it takes.

I know this is a year old post, but thought I would ask anyway. Will the Onan filter wrench fit, say a WIX filter?

Thanks

the problem is that the onan oil filter end is recessed in the genny. therefor, i used a napa 3 finger adjustable oil filter wrench to remove it. it helps if you use a strong rubber band around the 3 fingers. my filter was very tight and difficult to remove.
i don't know if the wix filter is the same length as the onan filter. if it is longer, it would be easier to remove and install. if it is shorter it would be a pita.

When I purchased my motorhome the generator had a Fram oil filter. This filter stuck out a few inchs making it easy to remove and install. Im a OEM kind of person so when I bought the cummins filter it was flush. Fortunately the oil change guys has a filter socket that fits over the end of the filter to install it.
