Tom,
Although I have not done it I would surmise that it would just mean changing the plywood platform to fit the king size dimensions. You can have a mattress firm custom make a bed for you so that it does not have to be to the exact large size of the regular king. If you have a queen already, do you have storage underneath? It may be a feature that is not as readily available with a king mattress.
Good luck.

How do you account for the distance between the nightstands?

That's probably my biggest question also and why I wondered if anyone had attempted modifying the side tables

I did it with my Journey. I took out the rear nightstand and kept the front intact. I put 2 x 4s across the existing frame and created a cantilever type support for the top deck.
It came out fairly well but I don't have a safe or anything between the bed and the closet. I can try to get pictures since I'm doing the winterizing today.
I used to own a 2005 40AD and don't remember all the differences between that and the Journey.

I'd be interested in seeing some photos as well. It can't be done in all models. Best one would be with large side tables with headboard of the bed at the back of the RV. Tough to do in a slide out unless same circumstance as above.

It would probably be easier to just install a regular House Type Queen Sized Mattress if Your looking for extra length! If You need more width then a King would of course be the route to go, but it might get pretty tight fitting one into many layouts!

WE ordered ours with a King instead of Queen. The problems we encountered was the mattress fit tightly between the night stands and making the bed without scraping all the skin off was impossible. The floor space around the bed was reduced as well and getting around the bed was cumbersum. At the first return to the factory service dept I paid to have the night stands removed and the anchoring holes covered. That helped with the skinned knuckles but the floor space was not improved. I would gladly go to a Queen. Just to cheap to do it!

House Queen and RV Queen are both the same width. Only difference is the length.

Here are some pictures of the underneath. I'm holding the bed up with one hand and working the camera with the other.
I made some wood spacers that are screwed down to the aluminum frame. The 2 x 4s are screwed down to the spacers. I used stair tread material for the deck extension. It is the same thickness as the deck.
