help needed on electrical system problem

After smelling a burning electrical smell, now all 12-volt power is on, but the 110 isn't working when plugged in. Everything works on the generator, but nothing on the inverter or the main 50 amp plug. Inverter says it is drawing 250 watts, which can't be right.

Start by checking the connections on the transfer switch.

When you had "burning electrical smell", were you on shore power or generator or none ?

Did you look inside the xfer switch? If the xfer switch connections look ok, then pop the cover off of the circuit breaker box and check things in there. The other possibility would be the inverter/charger.

we think it is the inverter/charger. Is there a way to override it somehow? Again, all works fine on the generator

ok, found transfer switch. no problems seen there or with circuit breakers. Found all wiring diagrams on Winnebago's website. All appliances and systems work perfectly on generator power, but no 110 appliance works on shore power alone, or with inverter running

Just a thought. Check to see if your shore power cord isn't shorted out and burnt through, where it comes into the rig, or where it comes into any pinch point. Hope this helps.

There may also be a transfer switch built into the inverter/charger. Does the inverter supply AC to all circuits?

Just to be clear, the problem exist only off shore power. Everything works off the generator.

If you are saying with generator OFF and 50amp Shore Power connected and ON that, using pdf page 6 of drawing http://www.winnebagoind.com/diagram/...ire_153624.pdf, you have:

On center cable (shore power cable) you have 110VAC between black to white AND 110VAC between red to white;
but on the bottom cable (load center cable) you do not have 110VAC between black to white AND 110VAC between red to white.

If that is the case, then the transfer switch is defective. The switch auto transfers from shore to generator when it detects the presence of generator power.

The burning smell indicates a serious issue that MUST be fixed pronto. Do not attempt to override as this can bring the fire department a-calling on your rig.

Since the Inverter shows power (I am assuming it shows power in) start with it's junction box.. Look for evidence of burned wires/poor connection. When I had the same problem you have (inverter showed power in, showed voltage (But not current) out, that was the first, and last, place I looked.. once I cleaned up the mess, re-dressed the wires and re-did the connection everything still works..

Withing the last month I smelled burning and my rear A/C refused to work ,blew the breaker in fact.. Again In found a junction box (in this case the 2nd place I looked was the last, Re-dressed and re-connected and it's working as I type.

Now; Back to the inverter: When you get that junction (Terminal) box open. "Attack" with volt meter, 200 or 250 volt range.. Make sure there is output..

If not, start looking to the input.

250 watts.. could be it's charger circuit charging the batteries and providing 12vdc to the house lights by the way.
