TV Removal and Replacement
Greetings!
I've seen a few people ask about the removal of the old tube-style TVs above the dashboard and thought I'd share my little project. First of all, the removal requires two strong men and a dog! After removing all of the assorted trim, the large brace on the top of the set must be unbolted and the super strong double-side foam tape seal must be broken. Take great care lifting it out, since all of the weight is high and awkward.
My project got a bit complicated, since I wanted to accomplish three things: TV removal, new TV installation in a more convenient location, and restoring the hole in the dash. I decided to remove and repurpose the cabinet above the third seat (left side of door).
I cut off the back 3" and reinstalled, then faced it with a piece of oak, and finally installed a heavy duty swing bracket. This was the new home for a 42" Samsung flat screen and soundbar system.
With the remainder of the cabinet, I removed ~3" from the width (which required extensive shelving modification) and added a new back. After going to town on the incredibly thick old TV cage (to the tune of five saber saw blades), I mounted the modified cabinet. I am very happy with the finished product. (Apologies for the photos - I can't rotate them to save my life).
Cheers!
