2004 Journey with turbo actuator issue
Hello all,
I have a 2004 Journey, 2003 chassis, with 5.9 Cummins. It is seeming like my turbo ACTUATOR is faulty or out of calibration. I'm having a heck of a time deciphering exactly what kind I have. Dealing with Cummins as I'm writing this. Seems the 2 numbers they gave me are very different in pictures of after market parts shops. The 2 numbers he gave were supposed to just be the same thing only one was a 'kit' that came with bolts and gasket. But..the main part, again, looks totally different on different sites offering it.
It's very expensive. I need to know exactly! Now what I'm thinking of is having this one removed and actually seeing the unit. And..another thought is that I can perhaps CLEAN this old one if the problem is dirt and build up. RV has only 75k on it.
My question here is mostly for any info on the actuator itself, where, exactly it is located on my engine (serial # 57097743) and how difficult it will be to remove myself. (I'm sure it will be in through "under the bed" area!)
When Check Engine light came on, I stopped at Petro in VA and they used a JPRO diagnostic system that pinpointed the actuator as failing or mis calibrated., failing to respond. I'm also hoping that that $200 test was good enough even though it wasn't exactly the Cummins unit.
Soooo, any input on any of these things will be appreciated, mi amigos, ...especially the part of if I should attempt this myself!
Thanks, and travel safe,
Dawn

Sorry to see so little info coming around. Pretty much Greek to me, though!
Any chance you might get better, more experienced group on a diesel forum? There are diesel folks here but getting down and dirty may not be top of the line here?

Richard is right. There are a few DIY repair folks here that work on their diesel motors... but not a lot. Most leave these things to the trained service techs.
Try the Freightliner Forum over on IRV2.com. Here's a link:

Thanks for your replies. Yes, probably wise to let a shop handle it. Wish I had one that had time AND expertise!
I'll try re posting in diesel forums.
Thanks, again, enjoy the day!

We had an "Injection actuation pressure sensor voltage high" code 10 years ago.
And wound up driving 400 miles in limp mode to find a shop that had the "time" to look at it.
Ours is a Cat 3126e on a Freightliner chassis but the point is.. it was a Kenworth dealer that said sure bring it in.
They looked at it and told us to bring it in the next day and they will have the part.
Camped overnight and went in the next day. They fixed it in an hour, worked great the part was $160 and labor was $215, not gonna mention the tip.
My point is you don't have to look to the engine/frame mfgr for help.

Well,
Been around diesels for more years than I care to admit but, I can't say I've heard of a turbo "actuator". About 99.99999% of turbos are automatically spun up by exhaust gases and the higher the rpms, the more power the turbo produces. Now, I have heard of and pretty much know what a turbo WASTE GATE is which, when a turbo spins up and actually produces more power than is supposed to be supplied, the waste gate opens and bleeds off extra turbo air. But, a turbo actuator, nope, not sure I've heard the term before. Just wondering.

turbo actuator
Well, won't that be wonderful if, indeed, it turns out to just be a sensor!
Hope so.
And, Fire Up, I guess yes, what even Cummins is calling an "actuator", is a "wastegate"...or does what the wastegate does.
Thanks for all the answers and advice. I have appointment with a shop July 22.
Fingers crossed
Best, Dawn
