Finally went ahead with pulling the beast picture tube TV out of our 2001 Brave. The picture was OK and it worked fine, was the lack of HDMI and the HD over air converter that motivated the switch.
This is what we were looking at as "stock."
Once the plastic shroud was off, it was clear that the 24" replacement TV was not tall enough to fill the space vertically. The plan was to install a DVD player under the TV. That way the entertainment center cabinet door could stay closed during a movie.
Here's the empty space and DVD mock up.
The TV mounting bracket is 3/4" ply. It was painted black before the TV bracket was installed.
Behind the plywood was 1.5" thick board that was used to bolt to the existing metal frame. Used the existing bolt area to attach. Here's a photo from behind the scenes.
Once the wood mounting bracket was complete, painted, and bolted in place the rest was easy. Made an oak frame and stained it with Varathane "Summer Oak" to match the existing cabinets. Also created a wood frame for the DVD player to sit on. Making it level and hiding the wiring left to right.
Here's a photo of the completed project.
Now we have HDMI from the DVD player and an HD tuner TV that does not require a converter and cheap converter remote. Also running an Android mini PC to the second HDMI TV input for streaming video, games, and photos.
Thanks for looking!
