Old reply...rear end generator tail pipe bends trim

Here is a little tidbit I wanted to share. Please recall my telling you about an accident I had inside KOA in Seattle...pulled loose the angle molding on the drivers side that joins the side and rear exterior panel. I ordered the replacement molding direct from Winnebago and paid a fortune to get it shipped due to the length.
So, when I installed new I found out I was actually missing two other pieces of trim...both the lower corner trim pieces that wrap around the bottom were missing. Looking close I could actually see adhesive was present that seemed to indicate the parts were there at one time. I have never had any accident or incident I could recall that would have caused damage to the rear of the vehicle at the lower level but both pieces were missing. There is also no evidence of any other damage (scratches, etc.) except a curved aluminum piece on passenger side (yes, opposite of my accident side) is bent up in the air a very little and needs to be repositioned to install the new trim piece.
I contacted Winnebago and they agreed to give me replacements at no cost treating as if they were never installed. Nice of them. I have received only 1 as of today but second is in transit. I will post pics when I install on the unit.
Weird huh? Dealer removed? Why? Delivery person had incident? Don't know.
BTW, I now have 16,362 miles and the unit has performed beautifully. Like YGOHOME I am so happy I spent the money to improve the suspension and I actually like my handling now...Almost drives itself. To be sure we could still have softer ride but not sure if I will do more. There are so many more options than just the track bars, sway bars, Safe-T-Plus, etc. How about Kon i or EVO99 Shocks? SumoSprings or Coil SumoSprings, Motion Control Units and new Tie Rods? Wow...all a fortune of course.
Best to all...I think my next trip is going to be down to Baja on the eastern side. Looking into escorted but will probably just go it alone.

Hey Feiter,
I was looking at some older posts and this one resonated with me. I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same issue, but I had my rear driver side end cap become dislocated on several occasions. Always when leaving a driveway/ gas station after filling up, thus adding a LOT of rear end weight. I never even knew at first why it happened.
What occurred was the generator tail pipe “C” clamp would catch on the ground, and force it back into the rear tail piece cap and behind the metal trim, and snap that cap off, and bend the metal trim.
So I decided to reorient that tale pipe for the generator to the rear of the coach, since the center point doesn’t rock as much back and forth when the rig exists a driveway, as it does when to the side.
Solved my issue. See the pics. Make sense?

Wyatt, if you mean changing out the refrig lamp to LED, Yes I did that. Guess there is more lighting in there now than before. And about the headlights, I believe you changed them out and am really pleased with night driving lighting. No, I have not did the headlights yet. Don't do much night driving, so low priority. Did add blue LED strips to both sides of steps that are controlled by Outside Light switch. Safer night entry now, and kinda pretty besides. Love the blue lighting under the dash as you did. Looks like a dance hall now.

I mounted a 4" steel wheel to the center of the hitch bar. Seems to keep everything safe so far.

@Wyatt
How difficult is it to re-orient the generator exhaust? The caulk on that corner looks damaged on ours, and I wonder if it is heat related.

Generator Tail Pipe Relocation
It’s simple to relocate the generator exhaust pipe to the rear, vs the side. You just have to crawl under and disconnect the two bolts holding the exhaust to the generators, and the metal/rubber bracket that suspends it from the vehicle.
Then just swivel the tail pipe to where you want it, then measure and cut it on your work bench to the length you’d like sticking out the back and reattach.
The mounting holes I used for the brackets that support the tailpipe, were already there in the frame rail skid plates out back. No drilling even required.

Yes, yours makes sense but I didn't really have any signs of damage. Just seemed to be missing and in the situation you had I assume the item was dislodged only on one side? Trying to post pics of my situation.

Mysterious Rear Cap Issue SOLVED
FYI--If you take a screen shot off the image and upload that, instead of the actual photo, it will be orientated correctly.
These two photos as you will see are from what I believe to be the same issue. At first, just the plastic rivet popped off. I didn't realize what had happened until the whole end cap busted off.
The reason is the gen exhaust "C" clamp would hit the ground and push the gen exhaust back into the end cap and pops it off. It's not good for there generator either--all that tweaking.
And yes, it only happens on the side of the generator. I even ground down the "C" clamp but it still would hit.
Relocating the generators exhaust pipe to the center under the skip plate solved this issue, as the skip plate hits first now, and protects the generator exhaust. Also, the rocking when leaving a driveway is less pronounced in the middle than at each side.
Think of a row boat in the water. It rocks back and forth quite a bit from side to side but the middle of the row boast stays pretty stationary.

This is a really good post! I have the identical issue with my unit. I wonder how many other units have experienced this issue?

The drawer is the one in the "tailgate" cabinet.

FUNNY, BUT so real during these times. I have been in some California great gold country to your north while attending computer classes. I would head up there. Get out of Dodge sorta say. If u can. We are pretty safe her so far. Arizona only has 15 counties. Our Gila county so far has only 3 positive victims, and 2 was because of travel. Be safe my friend.

Just added a post to illuminating the way too dark speedometer and gauge display.
It’s a 10 min video, but if you have a hard time seeing your gauges during the day, this is a fix...

Generator exhaust issue

Hi Mike,
I’d imagine anyone that had their generator exhaust connected with that “C” clamp hanging down so low would suffer the safe fate.
They used one with threads that are way too long. That, and it faces forward, not to the rear. So instead of scraping on the ground, it catches the pavement and is forced back into the rear tailpiece.
On my motorcycle, it has foot pegs that fold up if they hit asphalt when cornering. Clearly, had they been designed like our RV, it would catch and throw the bike into a spin and me into the ground, instead of gently folding up and reminding me I don’t have much further I can bank it.

Hey Wyatt, like the headlight, tail light and the "keep mama Happy" mirror improvements.
Can you direct me to where you purchased these items. I searched Amazon for the Command RV tail lights, but couldn't find the ones you used.
Thanks

Thanks Wyatt... Yep, trying to stay busy for sure. Can't return safely healthwise to Wisconsin in May by the looks of it, so Arizona my home for a bit longer. (that actually is good... more stuff to do here like UTV trails, camping in mountains etc).
And we will keep you busy my friend, by asking you question after question about all your improvements...

No problem, reach out to me so you don’t have to make some of the same mistakes I made diving into the deep end...
That bathroom mirror mod for example, I thought about that for a week before I dived in. Once you start taking that mirror off, you’re committed. The Kona trim piece is just stapled to the wall, but the actuall mirror part is glued on for life. You’re essentially ripping it off of the wall in chards.
I prepped the space for it, with visquine, and I wore protective goggles, leather gloves and a respirator, but I think covering the mirror in masking tape might have prevented it from breaking into the tiny fragments that took awhile to clean up.
The mounting was another ordeal. I’m doing a video on it, but it’s only held on by two hooks. Fine for a home that doesn’t go anywhere, which is what that was designed for, but not for a home on wheels, as in our case.
My solution, was to add an old plate from a TV wall mount, to BOLT the hooks onto the plate, and screw the plate into wall with a multitude of screws, so as to transfer/disperse the weight over a large area, and not rely on just the two hooks screwed into the wall.
Then, there’s the issue of it bouncing off of the hooks which though unlikely, could happen, and that, would be catastrophic. So, Adding 3m tape to the top, and two screws with rubber grommets at the top, will prevent it from bouncing up and off the hooks.
The headlights were easy, just remove the hood and they plug right in. A little plastic zip ties closed up the loose wires.
Taillights also straight forward, for me. Though someone else had an issue with the screws, since you have to reuse what’s there. I had no issue.
Goog luck, have fun, stay safe and sane...well be watching for your updates...
