Joe,
There is probably no need to do anything with the front cap to replace the heater core on your Journey. I replaced the heater core on a 2002 Horizon by disassembling the dash and working from inside the coach with minimal work from outside.
Once the dash panels are removed the HVAC fan can be removed & the plenum can dismounted from the firewall to easily open it up for the heater core replacement from the front of the coach. It's not a terribly difficult job. If you have the new heater core in hand it can be done easily in 4-6 hours.
A note for you, if the heater core is leaking from either of the supply/return nipples take a close look at them. On my original heater core those nipples were screwed into the core and were most likely the cause of my leak. If you can tell if the nipples are threads and screw into the core I recommend removing them, cleaning the threads on the nipples and core, apply teflon tape, screw them back in and see if that fixes the leak. The new core I installed had nipples that were welded to the core, apparently as either a cost mod or to avoid leaking nipples
