Trickle charger instal for chassis

2000 winnebago journey36l, I wanted to add a trickle charger to chassis batteries. I needed to check once I hooked up , would I need to unplug while engine is running because of alternator. I wasn't sure if alternator 12 volts would short out 110 volt trickle charger.

Dibbsvtx1-

You may want to install a Trik-L-Start or Amp-L-Start.

We have installed one in each of our four motorhomes over the years and never a worry or problem with the other charging sources on board.

When the coach batteries are being charged whether it be by shore, generator, or solar, the chassis batteries are being charged too.

All of our motorhomes have also always been wired so that when the engine and alternator are spinning both the chassis and coach batteries are being charged.

I've used both a 120V float charger and the Trik-L-Start on two RVs. If you have the AC available nearby the battery compartment, or don't mind doing the wiring, there's no problem wiring in a AC powered float charger (@ $25 will save over the TLSart and a 2.5 amp rating is good) and just leaving it to do it's work. It'll work fine when you're plugged in and won't harm anything when you're on the road.

I like the Amp-L-Start. Small in size and easy install.

I agree with Jim_HiTek. Our batteries are under the entry step. I used to just clip a big clip lead from the house batteries + to the chassis battery + while the coach was parked and plugged in, and removed it for a trip. Since I installed the Battleborns and adjusted the Xantrex to charge them at their desired higher voltage, I stopped that practice and use a Harbor Freight trickle charger.

It's plugged into the indoor outlet behind the passenger seat, and I run the wire under the top step and clip it to the chassis battery terminals.

As long as I'm plugged in to shore power and battery switch on my inverter keeps both house and coach batteries charged. I have a 2001 Adventurer.
