Adding spare tire & carrier

Who has added a spare tire to a smaller Class A gasser?

I have a 2016 Winnebago Vista 31KE and would feel better if I had a spare tire with me. What kind can mount on this unit and does Winnebago make a spare carrier than can be retro-fitted?

Not exactly sure of the compartment size and configuration on the 2016 model, but I used to have a 2014 Suntsar 31KE (I think they are the same). I bought a used matching rim from an RV salvage company and bought a lower cost tire of equivalent size and had it mounted on the used wheel.Had to verify the bore hole and the number of lug holes Loaded it all fine in the rear compartment. Didn't take much room as it lay flat in the compartment. Never had to use it but was happy to always have it along as I have had 4 tire failures on RV's over the past 30 years. I recall it ran about $300 to put it all together and never had to worry about any mounting needs.

You may carry it with you but if you have a flat how are you going to change it? Do you plan on carrying that heavy a duty jack and a air system that can torque to 145ftlbs go right ahead. Personally save the space and buy an Road Hazard warranty, AAA, Good Sams or something. Let them bring you a new tire and install it for you. You've got 3 different type of rims on your MH. So you would need 3 spares

I have the Roadmaster spare tire carrier mounted on hitch. Bought rim and tire. I won't change a flat, but coach net can send out someone and I don't need to spend a grand for tire, mounting, etc. probably won't get the right size tire, which means I would need to purchase another tire that fits.

It's like insurance to me....... Hope you never need it, but glad you have it when you do.

I have heard too many stories of, "We have someone that can change the tire, we just can't find you a tire till Monday" I currently have an unmounted tire that I throw in the back of the Grand Cherokee. I am playing with the idea of picking up a spare rim for it. I don't know if the rims are different or not. That will need to be investigated. But at least I know I won't have to pay $750 - $1,000 for the tire that they came up with.

Carry the spare tire! I've had big delays as the tow driver scurried about the countryside trying to find replacement.

I also have the Roadmaster spare tire mount at the hitch with a mounted tire. Makes me feel better.

I understand that if you have aluminum rims the inner dual rim is steel, but a steel spare can always be put on in place of the aluminum one, front or rear, so long as you have a set of standard open lugnuts that will screw all the way on.

Where does this "third" different rim come from?

I have been told that with the 19.5" tire, the rims are the same - can anyone confirm that?

Yes they are, as is 22.5 rims. The only difference in the rims will be steel on the rear inside position (most 22.5 rims). Rear position rims are mounted with the inside position rim facing the same way as the front rim, the outside rim is mounted opposite (turned around) of the inside rim, so one rim fits all positions.

I made and fitted a tire rack under my Vista 30T. Has a winch that can drag the tire under the vehicle and lift it up into place where 4 nuts retain it. Works very well. Tire is 245/70x 19.5.Click image for larger version

Pete, that's what I'm looking for, and it looks like it packaged well. I hear roadmaster makes something similar.

Nice job Peter, I recently built a under mount tire carrier similar to the one you built. I used a couple pieces of channel iron a winch/carrier from Ford (F450/550) still don't have the wheel/tire but it's on it's way. I've been trying to figure out a safety device to hold the tire/wheel combo, I think you just solved that for me.

What about the Lippert Spare Tire Winch (Lippert Spare Tire Winch : Cabela's)?

Disregard, only works for a tire up to 16"

My question is about a spare for a diesel pusher, I have a 2011 Itasca Ellipse 42QD with a rear radiator. I was considering the road master spare tire system but was concerned with the spare tire and the hot airflow from the coach. Does anyone have one installed or know of any issues with overheating of the engine or damage to the spare from the heat coming from the radiator.
Thanks for your thoughts.

My original spare tire carrier did not work anymore (cable was binding up inside the winch). I contacted this company
http://www.tecaassembly.com/rv.html
and they provided me with a winch specifically fitting my tire and vehicle.

Adding spare tire & carrier

Hudsoner, that winch would be a nice part of a tire carrier, if I didn't already have one.👍🏻

I got my tire/wheel combo and mounted it up on the carrier looks like it's going to work, just need to install a couple of threaded rods from the channel iron through the holes in the wheel for safety purposes.Click image for larger version

I added one to our Adventurer 37F. Had to fabricate my own rack Found a hoist I could make work. Had to move a propane line and dogear the the lower edge end of the chassis frame. Can be done but I'd hate to have to pay someone to do it. Parts, bolts, taps, tire and rim cost me $1100.

That's why most people don't do it. However, if you have a tire issue, you will lose a bunch of time on the road and spend $500 for a tire you won't want and no rim will be available. If it's a front tire, you will destroy the rim before you can get off the road. A rear won't wreck the rim. For us, it is worth the cost. Buy a good tire monitor and keep a close eye even if you have a spare.
