Replacing the freshwater tank

Hi there! I have a 2005 Winnebago 30B Sightseer. The freshwater tank is shot and needs to be replaced. My hubby has been all over the Winnebago website and cannot find the part number to buy a replacement tank. He says he will look again at the tank to make sure that is the issue but he is pretty sure that is the problem. It has been sitting on our driveway for a few years. He recently went in after replacing the main battery, saw mold on the bottom of the bed frame and the carpet. He lifted the bed and found black mold inside the bed frame against the tank. We are assuming that the tank is no longer holding water. It was almost empty.

One of the fittings to my fresh water tank came loose (probably from bad CA roads) and started to leak. It saved a lot of money to tighten a fitting rather than replace the tank! :-) iIf you haven’t already, I would check the fitting where the water exits the tank on its way to the water pump. Good luck with the repair!

Winnebago makes all of their own tanks. You can call WBGO to get the part number for your coach, or better yet call Litchsinn RV in Forest City just a few blocks from the factory. They will know the part number and can get you the tank.

By the way mold in wood is extremely difficult to remove as it grows inside the wood. Use vinegar and not bleach to attempt to clean it up.

From page 206 of the Parts Catalog for your coach:
148137-02-01A EA TANK - WATER - 70 GALLON - W/FITTINGS
042989-03-000 EA FITTING - SPINWELD - 1 1/4"NPT - PLASTIC
042989-05-000 EA FITTING - SPINWELD - 1/2"FPT - PLASTIC
042989-08-000 EA FITTING - SPINWELD - 1"FPT - PLASTIC
049032-01-000 EA PATCH - SPINWELD - 3/8" - PLASTIC
148137-01-01A EA TANK - WATER - 70 GALLON - W/O FITTINGS
The advice to call Lichtsinn's is good, btw. (They also provide a 10% discount to WIT Club members.)

If Winnebago cannot help you then I would search Marine sites, as there are places which custom make tanks for boats to fit whatever space you have.

Concrobium make an excellent mold control product that contains no bleach and will break up the mold spores to kill them and provides some protection against re-infestation as long as you eliminate the moisture. Their Mold Eraser can be used afterwards to remove any staining and can even be used to remove mold and rust stains from the ceiling carpet found in our coaches.

As for a potentially cracked tank they can be plastic welded fairly simply without needing to replace them as long as they are not severely damaged by heat or UV exposure.
