Microwave needs 30 anps

We had an interesting experience today. We are at a campground with only a 20 amp hookup. Started to High Pointe microwave and it didn’t cook on the microwave function. We turned off the water heater and pump and it worked although at less than full strength. When we have a 30 amp hookup it’s fine. If you’re having trouble this may be the cause!

Greetings Mossfleur56,
Is your water heater propane or electric?
Welcome to the forum.

We had the Highpoint and found that it only put out 800 watts thus was useless even for warming up a cup of coffee. Sure it was a "convection/microwave" but of much more use has been packing an air fryer when on grid. As we camp mostly off grid the space it takes up is too valuable.
It also turns out that the unit weighed in at close to 40 LBS! And it was situated over the fridge in our kitchen slide out.
We do not miss it in the least. If we do want one in future it will not be a built in one but a cheap dime store 1000 watt .9 cubic foot one that only weighs in at 15 lbs or so.
We tried to sell it but had no takers and wound up donating it to Habit for Humanity. They most likely put it in their lunch room because the unit is ok for heating foods but useless for cooking to say the least.

You were likely experiencing voltage drop from inadequate CG wiring. It can harm things like air conditioners but for resistive loads it just doesn't allow them to produce their rated power, and a microwave is almost entirely a resistive load.
