Noisey roof top A/C
The roof top A/C units are very noisy. The air rush is something we have to live with. But the compressor noise and other rattles as they run?? Not as much so I found out today.
Over the years I have read that the mountings have shock springs that need to be adjusted from time to time. I had not tried to find them until today.
I started my quest by removing the middle unit shroud. Then I removed the cover of the condenser/controller housing. Deep on the bottom of this access I could see the front 2 mounting springs in the left and right corners, and the rear mountings under the rear shroud. These have access covers taped over them.
I was in the dark as to what torque I needed to make the correct adjustment. I used my 12V screw gun with an extension and a 3/8" driver socket to make the adjustments. All was done by eyeing the compression of the springs to a reasonable amount. I found not one of them had tension on them.
With the unit still open, I turned the A/C on and listened. I can still detect a bit of rumbling from the compressor but it seems much less distracting. With everything back together it is still better.
While I was working on the unit I blew off the condenser with a air compressor to get rid of some of the dust that had collected. Then I took the housing off the condensation pump and put a drop of light oil in the lube hole on the top bearing.
I hope the attached pictures help you to see what I did with a better understanding.
Happy trails,
Rick
