Guest Sleeping Comfort

We have a 2010 Tour 42AD. We have only had someone sleep over a couple of times. Each time they said that the sleeping surfaces were not very comfortable. We are planning to have the in-laws join us on a short trip to Maine in a couple of weeks. The DW wants to get something like a topper or air mattress to put on the fold down couch/seats for her parents to sleep on. I on the other hand would like to keep it uncomfortable for visitors. Just wondering if anyone has come up with a comfortable an storable solution that works.

Air mattress for the wife's ease of mind, and make it a real thin one for yours.

If it's too comfortable it can become a permanent arrangement. Uncomfortable, Nothing to store.

Remember the RVers adage, "This motorhome drinks 6,eats 4, and sleeps 2".

Egg crate foam works okay but then you need to store it.

Perfect!

But as a practical matter:
It seems to me that if they don't like what's on offer, guests would do well to choose/bring along whatever "upgrades" to the bed they feel suits them. They know best what would be comfortable for them and they can take it away when they go, thus saving you the trouble of storing something you don't need.

I see this as no different from bringing along one's own pillow...I wouldn't be caught away from home without mine, and wouldn't expect anyone to provide another to my specifications.

If you make it too comfy they may want to camp with you more than you'd like to have them. You can buy a topper and roll it up in the daytime but that will get old very fast - and where will you store it during the day?

I keep a Aero-Bed onboard. I have a jacknife sofa that is not comfy to sleep on. It has it's own air pump and set up time is less than 5 minutes. Take down time is about the same. It stores easily. From you side you can always ,conveniently, leave it at home.

Once in a while, like it or not, you just need to make room for family or close friends. We use one of those roll up memory foam toppers about 2" thick. We store it under the dinette bench, but otherwise keep it at home.

Can't speak on the comfort since I never slept on it, but we've had no complaints

cheers,
Joopy

I think it is time to invoke the RV Rule.

Drinks for six, food for four, sleeps two.

We took out the hide a bed and put two La Z Boy recliners in. Grandson sleeps on an air mattress in a sleeping bag. Works for us as he's 13 and really doesn't like to go with us old folks anymore anyway. We don't bring the computer, Kindle Fire, Wii or xBox so he suffers withdrawal!!

We have a Intex Queen Pillow Rest matrress and everyone that has sleep on it says it is very comfortable. The air pump is built inside the mattress, it blows up and deflates in very short time. The price is very reasonable. It is currently on sale at Kmart for $35.99.

We do the same, although not often.

A queen air mattress fits nicely in front of the fireplace between the 2 sofas. Leaves just enough room to get by to get my coffee.

Rolls up small enough to fit in the drawer under the sofa.

I would love to share a campfire with you all. It's wonderful to see folks whose parents taught them to treat others as they would like to be treated.

Other post show parents didn't do to well. O well.

Blow up airbeds are cheap, but they're notorious for leaking in the middle of the night. They're also designed to go on a flat hard surface (wood floor, carpet, plywood, etc). Putting them on seat cushions might cause your inlaws to roll to the center of the mattress or off the side (might be a good thing if you want to get rid of them!).

You might look for a memory foam topper which can be made in the size of your couch seats. Something that's around 2" thick would be enough to provide comfort, not break the bank, and it could be easily rolled up and stored when it's not in use. Going with something thicker than 2" would be more comfortable, but difficult to roll up.

If you go this route, ask the retailer what the density of the foam is. Lower density foams (2-3 LB's) are easier on the pocket book and are good for occasional use. Higher density foams (4 LB's or above) tend to be more costly but they last considerably longer and can be used on a nightly basis.
