RVer Accidentally Dumps Sewage into Gas Station Fuel Tank

I'm puzzled as to how someone could be so stupid, plus I wouldn't thing a gas station tank cap would be easy to remove:

Gas prices stink, but this is over the top...

Here's more on the incident:

https://www.rvtravel.com/rv-blackwat...on-fuel-pumps/

I still wonder about the security of the tank cap. If it was easy for anyone to remove you'd think there'd be numerous reports of vandalism and contaminated tanks. Maybe it was left unlocked for some reason.

"Oh look Honey, how cool is it that they put a dump station right at the fuel pumps! Two birds at once!"

Not to give they guy a pass, but, if the outer security cover was open, I suppose some of these could look like a dump station cap:

He's still an idiot.

Yes, but you would expect a sign saying sewer dump, possibly a dump fee, and a hose nearby for cleanup. And it's not like there isn't something else obvious that a hole in the ground at a gas station would be--and almost certainly there were several of these in the same general location.

The guy is an idiot, a very low level idiot.

Not exactly on topic but for you boat owners how about the people who have pumped gallons of gasoline into a rod holder on their boat. I never let anybody pump gas for my boat.

People just make dumb mistakes. Oh and I've never made any! Haha

Actually they were all very lucky!
He only ruined a tank of gas while if he had been really good at messing up, he could have done it bigger. Like the kids who climbed to the top of an oil storage tank and wondered how much it had in it so they used a lighter to see better?

A person would have to be unbelievably stupid to mistake a fuel station fill port up on a mound with no hose down station, berm, etc as a sanitary dump station. The powerful smell of gasoline would be the second clue and the labeling on the port the third.

Not asking permission or inquiring about if there was a dump fee first says something too about the RVer.

My brother managed a gas station for a while and they were quite wary of anyone that parked over the fill ports especially if they had a large vehicle since it was not unusual for some to try and pump out 100 or so gallons if they thought the attendants were too busy to notice so one can't say very much about the attendant or their security practices.

The fuel will likely go to a polishing service to separate it from the waste and it may end up in another stations fuel tank.

I used to build stations. Caps on the fill ports are usually always padlocked to keep thieves from pumping fuel out when the station is closed.

The fuel will have to be pumped into a tanker and transported to a refinery to be cleaned and then delivered back to the station. This is going to cost someone $ thousands. Fuel cleaning is around a buck a gallon plus trucking

Just on a different but somewhat similar story. RV pulled up to the pumps asked to fill with gas, young passenger gets out unlocks the fresh water and fills water tank with gas. Customer then blames the service station for a very costly mistake. Manager states you open the locked lid.

According to the notes the original owner of my MH wrote in the owner's manual, they did exactly that to mine. I've never detected any lasting effects.

The costly part is in paying a hazardous material company to remove the contents of the tank, deal with the separating of the fuel from the water and cleaning the tank out of any of the poisonous residue left by the fuel additives. If cleaned up properly there should be no lasting effects however doing it right isn't cheap.

Each time I see this my mind's eye sees the meme of Sam Elliot saying something about "A special kind of Stupid". I just can't imagine even an inexperienced or absent-minded person doing this.
